Boosie Badazz, the Baton Rouge rapper known for his raw storytelling and Southern Hip Hop influence, was awarded an honorary PhD in music composition from Heritage University, a Christian institution. The ceremony took place this month, where Boosie, born Torence Ivy Hatch Jr., was recognized for his contributions to the music industry.

The decision to honor Boosie sparked controversy due to his history of making raunchy and sexually-explicit music with profanity and violence, as well as homophobic and transphobic comments. Heritage University, known for its Christian values, faced backlash from some who questioned the alignment of Boosie’s past actions with the institution’s mission. Supporters, however, argued that the degree acknowledges his musical achievements and influence.

In addition to his academic accolade, Boosie celebrated the arrival of his ninth child, a daughter named Sevyn, with fiancée Rajel Nelson. The couple announced the pregnancy in November 2024 during a gender reveal at Boosie’s 42nd birthday party. Sevyn is the first child for Boosie and Rajel, who have been together for several years. Boosie has eight other children from previous relationships.
