Six Flags America to Permanently Close After 2025 Season

The thrill ride is nearing its final drop at Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland. The amusement park will officially shut its gates for good at the end of the 2025 season, according to an announcement made Thursday by Six Flags Entertainment Corporation CEO Richard Zimmerman.
The final day of operation is slated for November 2, 2025.
Zimmerman said the decision to close the park was based on financial considerations. The 500-acre property is expected to be put up for sale, with plans to market it for redevelopment.
“As part of a comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we’ve concluded that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor no longer align with the company’s long-term strategic vision,” Zimmerman said. “After exploring several options, we believe repurposing the land offers the best opportunity for return on investment. We anticipate considerable interest in the site.”
The park originally opened in 1974 as a wildlife preserve and theme park and was once owned by businessman—and future presidential candidate—Ross Perot. It was rebranded as Six Flags America in 1999, becoming the tenth park in the Six Flags family.
The future of the park’s employees remains uncertain, though Zimmerman noted that 70 corporate staff members will receive severance packages and other support.
“This was not an easy decision,” Zimmerman said. “We understand the impact this will have on our employees and guests. We are deeply thankful to our team members who have dedicated themselves to creating memorable experiences, and we are committed to supporting them throughout the transition.”
