Each year on the last Wednesday of April, communities worldwide observe Denim Day to raise awareness about sexual violence and challenge harmful myths surrounding it. This year, Denim Day falls on April 30, 2025.

The campaign originated in 1992 in Italy following a controversial court ruling that overturned a rape conviction, suggesting the victim’s tight jeans implied consent. In protest, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work, sparking a global movement. In 1999, Peace Over Violence launched Denim Day in Los Angeles, and it has since become an annual event observed internationally.

Denim Day serves as a visible means of protest against victim-blaming and an opportunity to support survivors of sexual violence. Participants are encouraged to wear jeans and engage in conversations about consent and respect. The campaign also promotes education and advocacy to end sexual violence in all its forms.

Organizations across the United States, including universities, law enforcement agencies and community groups, host events and activities to commemorate Denim Day. These events aim to foster solidarity, educate the public and empower individuals to take action against sexual violence.

By wearing denim on April 30th, individuals join a global movement to disrupt rape culture and affirm that there is no excuse and never an invitation to rape.
