MD Man Still Locked Up in El Salvador as Family Fights for Justice
What happens when the system gets it wrong—but refuses to make it right?
That’s the heartbreaking reality facing Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was mistakenly deported and is now sitting in one of El Salvador’s most dangerous prisons. Despite a federal judge’s order to bring him home, Abrego Garcia remains behind bars while political tensions rise between U.S. and Salvadoran leaders.
“It’s absolutely unjust and illegal to have this Marylander detained one more day,” said U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, who’s now pushing hard for Garcia’s return.
Garcia’s family is holding on tightly to hope. His wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, stood strong after the Supreme Court temporarily paused the order to bring him home:
“We’re not going to give up hope,” she said.
Eventually, the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration’s emergency appeal—ordering officials to make good on Garcia’s return. But even with the highest court in the land speaking out, Garcia is still locked up.
Now, Van Hollen says if Bukele won’t meet with him in D.C., he’ll go straight to El Salvador. He’s also backing moves to hold U.S. government lawyers in contempt of court, saying,
“They’re absolutely snubbing their nose at the courts right now—including the Supreme Court.”
Tensions are rising fast. Maryland Rep. Glenn Ivey called out Trump’s team for “trying to force a constitutional crisis.” Meanwhile, supporters of Garcia gathered Monday for a powerful prayer service and rally in front of Baltimore’s George H. Fallon Federal Building.
“People with a heart and soul are sick to their stomach,” said one man at the rally. “This is wrong. This is cruel. And I can’t stand with it. So I speak up.”
The movement is growing. Now all eyes are on the next step: Will the U.S. bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home?
