Will The Eagles Visit The White House Following Their Big Game Victory?
Rumors swirled earlier this week about whether the Eagles will visit President Trump at The White House following their Super Bowl win.
After beating the Kansas Chiefs 40-22, the Eagles allegedly decided not to accept a White House invite this year after Trump canceled their visit in 2018, according to multiple media reports.
Before winning this year’s Big Game, a member of the Eagles ownership group reportedly told insiders that discussions were happening between the team’s front office and players about the matter, should they win, and there was a “massive no” from both groups.
In 2018, the Eagles planned visit to the White House was abruptly canceled by President Trump, sparking national controversy. The Eagles had won Super Bowl LII that February, and as is customary for championship-winning teams, they were invited to visit the White House to celebrate the victory. However, the visit was called off shortly before the scheduled date, with Trump citing disagreements over the national anthem protests, which had become a polarizing issue in American sports.
In a statement, the White House announced that the Eagles were unable to come due to a “disagreement over the anthem and the President’s stance on players kneeling during the anthem.” Some Eagles players had expressed their intention not to attend in protest of Trump’s policies, especially on social justice issues. Trump’s cancellation led to backlash from those who supported the players’ right to protest peacefully, while others defended the decision, citing the President’s stance on patriotism and respect for the anthem. Instead of a team visit that year, the White House held a smaller event, where Trump delivered a speech praising the military and American values, but without the presence of the Eagles’ players.
Fast-forward to this week, league sources say that if invited, the Eagles will, in fact, visit the White House. The Eagles nor the White House have commented on the issue.
