Simone Biles Says It’s Unlikely She’ll Compete in 2028 Olympics
Sports Illustrated has named Olympian Simone Biles as its 2024 sportsperson of the year. According to the media outlet, Biles has “altered the face of gymnastics” and changed “the conversations around athletes in general” when it comes to speaking out about the importance of mental health.
After a winning performance in Paris for the 2024 Olympics, many are expecting Biles to do it bigger and better for the 2028 Olympics, but the 27-year old gymnast says that’s unlikely.
“Because I’ve accomplished so much, there’s almost nothing left to do, rather than to just be snobby and to try again and for what?” said Biles in her interview with Sports Illustrated. “I’m humble enough to know when to be done.”
Making her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Games, Biles captured the world’s attention with her unmatched talent, winning four gold medals and one bronze, cementing her status as a gymnastics legend. Her performance there, characterized by extraordinary difficulty and flawless execution, earned her the title of the most decorated gymnast at a single Olympics Game.
Biles returned to the Olympics for the 2020 Tokyo Games, where she became a focal point of both triumph and challenge. Despite being widely favored to dominate, she withdrew from several events to prioritize her mental health, bringing attention to the pressures elite athletes face. She ultimately won a bronze medal in the balance beam final, adding to her legacy.
Now, with a total of seven Olympic medals, including four gold medals, Biles has not only redefined the sport of gymnastics but has also pushed boundaries with her groundbreaking skills, including new moves that are now named after her. Her Olympic journey has made her a symbol of both athletic excellence and resilience, inspiring countless athletes worldwide.
