The words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” were scrawled in permanent marker, which echo a phrase often used by insurance industry critics to describe tactics used by insurers to avoid paying claims. This phrase—”delay, deny, defend”—refers to a strategy where insurers delay payment, deny claims, and defend their actions, a common complaint from patients and doctors against health insurance companies like UnitedHealthcare.

Investigators also suspect that the shooter may have traveled to New York last month from Atlanta on a Greyhound bus. The police are now trying to trace the suspect’s movements, including whether they purchased the bus ticket in late November. New images of a person of interest have also been released, showing a man smiling in the lobby of a Manhattan hostel, as well as footage from before and after the shooting. Security cameras recorded the shooter approaching Thompson from behind and firing several shots, barely pausing when the gun jammed. The killer then fled the scene on foot and rode away on a bicycle.

The attack occurred on Wednesday morning as Thompson was walking from his hotel to UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference at a nearby Hilton hotel. The police believe the attack was targeted, but the motive remains unclear. Thompson, who had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004, had reportedly received threats before his death, possibly related to issues with insurance coverage.

Thompson’s death has sent shockwaves through the health insurance industry, as UnitedHealthcare serves over 49 million Americans and generates billions in revenue. The company has faced criticism, particularly from doctors and patients, for its denial rates and issues with prior authorizations. A Senate report in October highlighted UnitedHealthcare, along with other insurers like Humana and CVS, for their high denial rates for Medicare Advantage patients. Despite the attack, UnitedHealthcare’s conference continued without Thompson, and the company has not yet publicly addressed the exact reasons behind the murder.
