Happy National Voter Registration Day! Today is all about celebrating democracy and encouraging people to register to vote.

According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as one in four eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Every year, millions of Americans are unable to vote simply because they missed the registration deadline, didn’t update their registration, or aren’t even sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day aims to raise awareness of voter registration opportunities so that more citizens are able to vote when it comes time.

Below is everything you need to know about registering to vote in the state of Maryland.

How to register or update your registration:

Voter registration deadlines for the November 5, 2024 election:

  • Find state and local election dates here.
  • Online registration deadline: Tuesday, October 15, 2024
  • Register by mail deadline: Must be postmarked by Tuesday, October 15, 2024
  • In person registration deadline: Tuesday, November 5, 2024

How to check your voter registration:

Voting after a criminal conviction: 

  • You can vote even if you were convicted of a felony, if:
    • The felony convictions are not for the crime of buying or selling votes; and
    • You have completed your imprisonment.
    • You can also vote while on probation, unless you were convicted of buying or selling votes.
  • You cannot vote if:
    • You were ever convicted of buying or selling votes; or
    • You have been convicted of a felony and are currently serving a court-ordered sentence of imprisonment for the conviction; or
    • You’re under guardianship for mental disability AND the appropriate court has found by clear and convincing evidence that you cannot communicate, with or without accommodations, a desire to participate in the voting process.
