Legendary singer Mariah Carey has released a statement revealing that she recently lost her mother and sister on the same day.

According to reports, the deaths happened over the weekend, but no other details regarding the causes are available at this time. In her statement, Carey said:

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy at this impossible time.”

Carey’s and her sister’s relationship with their mother, Patricia, was allegedly strained. Back in 2020, Alison, Carey’s sister, accused Patricia of sexual abuse that occurred when Alison was 10 years old. In a New York lawsuit filing, Alison claimed that Patricia allowed and encouraged multiple men to engage in sexual acts with her and made her witness people in sexual activity with adults and children as a part of “middle-of-the-night satanic worship meetings.”

Carey never publicly addressed the lawsuit or the accusations against her mother, but she did describe her relationship with Patricia as a “complicated love.” In Carey’s memoir, which she partially dedicated to Patricia, the singer writes, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white – it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.”

Carey goes on to say that her relationship with Patricia, who was also an opera singer, was a “prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”

Alison, who was HIV positive, passed a way at the age of 63 and battled homelessness, drug addiction and other health issues. Patricia was 87 years old at the time of her death.
