Homecoming season in the HBCU community is known as “Family Reunion Time.” Over the past two years Homecoming season has been shut down due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. With safety precautions increasing in America and vaccinations on the rise colleges and universities have reinstated their homecoming activities — with reservations. Morehouse College has chosen to exercise their reservation by cancelling their public homecoming but still have it for the current students, faculty and staff on campus.

According to WSB-TV Atlanta, “The city of Atlanta has the sixth-highest per capita infection rate in the nation and an unprecedented number of young people have become ill with the virus,” officials said. “Given the circumstances, a massive in-person gathering on our campus presents a public health risk to our students which is impossible to ignore.”

Officials said nearly 100% of the students and employees on campus have met the vaccination requirement, so in place of homecoming, the school will host a students-only fall festival.

This is one of many that is expected to come based upon the same reasoning Morehouse College has chosen to opt-out.
