In honor of the victims and families of victims of suicide, I’m recognizing Suicide Prevention Week this week with the focus on S.A.V.E. Yesterday, I covered “S” for Signs. Today, I’m going to look at “A” for Advocate. Meaning finding ways for  you to make a difference in getting the information out about suicide prevention. As an advocate, you can do more than write a check.

Here are some ideas on what you can do:

  • Increase awareness about suicide as a public health concern
  • Educate their communities about suicide and mental illness
  • Build partnerships with suicide prevention and mental health organizations, government agencies, local media, and others
  • Walk to prevent suicide in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, Campus Walks and Overnight
  • Volunteer with your local chapter
  • Attend an event in your area
  • Donate to AFSP
